#1 They know how to take an honest look at themselves.
Because suicide is the most sincere form of self criticism, pride and arrogance, as a means of holding a fragile ego together, have long been abandoned.
#2 They give credence to what Jean-Paul Sartre terms “nothingness.”
Some of us prefer the term “emptiness”, but who are we to argue with a famous French philosopher?
#3 They find meaning in a meaningless world.
We all know that in the grand scheme of things our lives are meaningless, but as a suicidally depressed person, you are more of less forced to come to terms with it.
#4 They exist in close alignment with the present moment.
There’s nothing like extremely unpleasant emotions to draw you completely into the nexus of your existence.
#5 They are on intimate terms with death.
You cannot help but be when your thoughts turn to the idea of annihilation as a possible escape. Living so close to death gives you a refreshingly uncluttered perspective on life.
#6 They understand that every reality is a valid reality.
Including the one they find themselves in. This gives them permission to go more deeply into an experience that others perceive as a “worst-case scenario.”
#7 They suspect there is a state of unity behind all appearances.
Having gone so deeply into their own experience, they have touched upon that point of reference known as “all that is.”
#8 They refer to the void as the basis for all reality.
Having glimpsed this truth, there is an understanding that everything comes from, and returns into, the void. This fosters the realization that it is a state to be connected to, and not to be feared or separated from.
#9 They admit they are not in control.
Eventually there is the realization that you can’t win a battle against the immutable forces of the universe. Acceptance soon follows.
#10 They become one with their experience
Once the resistance ceases, peace takes its place. You realize that you are Pure Life, and that what was once considered disposable is now known to be the greatest gift, not a drop of which is to be wasted.
