I was eleven years old when I sat down and calculated how much time I could save if I didn’t brush my hair, wear make-up, or tuck in my shirts. I decided that the people I loved for their adventurous lifestyles never stopped to put comb to hair or brush to cheek. Of course, these people were on TV or in the movies, and it was totally unrealistic, but in my child’s mind I believed that their devil-may-care attitude was real, and I adopted it.
Whenever women ask me why I don’t brush my hair, I tell them I couldn’t possibly improve on what I wake up to in the morning, or that I’ve got the kind of hair that never needs to be brushed. This elicits a variety of reactions, depending on the woman. But the real reason is that I truly believe most people look better in the “untamed” version of themselves. For this reason, I am working on hosting an “International Wild Hair Day”, a day where women all over the world wake up and sport whatever hairdo they stumble out of bed with. When I am ready I will announce it, and I hope you will join me in my effort. But be forewarned: you just might like your new look better than the old one. And before you know it, you might find yourself tossing out that expensive shampoo and conditioner in favour of some hypoallergenic biodegradable concoction followed by a head dunk in a salt bath. But I’ll stop now, before I give away too many of my beauty secrets…
My family has had pervasive depression, there was also minimal nurturing, and I agree with your link between the two. I used to get trapped in the future because romanticising was one of the few pleasures of my childhood, and yet the anxiety it also caused makes it a double-edged sword. I now try to live in the present, although I don’t find it easy. 12-step, Pema Chodron and others have been helpful. For me, biking is a wonderful meditation.
Thank you for sharing your blog.
Here’s a quote you may like: If you bring out what is inside you, what is inside you will save you. If you fail to bring out what is inside you, what is inside you will destroy you.
From The Gnostic Gospels.
Anne, I LOVE that quote. Thanks for the note and for sharing what has helped you on your own journey.
Well, Miss Margo, I have tried your philosophy on weekends and any other day when I didn’t have to make a professional appearance. Ah, the freedom! Sign me up for International Wild Hair Day! I’ll be your North Carolina spokesmodel!
