As a writer, I often get asked how I deal with “writer’s block.” And the straight answer is that I have never experienced it.
I don’t believe in writer’s block, mainly because I am never at a loss for words and I consider writing to be talking with your pen. I actually prefer writing over talking because I know that I can go back and edit, something I sorely wish I could do on several social occasions each year…
While I am not very good at editing what I say, most people are too good at it. As a society we are programmed to be careful what we say to other people so that we don’t offend them, or lose valuable opportunities by speaking our truth. These social skills have no place in the creative process, where it is all about allowing your innermost thoughts, feelings and desires out.
Let’s face it: thoughts are streaming through our minds at breakneck speed all day. Writer’s block is nothing more than the fear of what others will think if we expose ourselves, in all our vulnerable nakedness, to the world. This is the ultimate risk, and one that I highly recommend you take as a crucial step on your road to empowerment.
